Meet Our Doctors

Ali Travis, DVM – Owner / Veterinarian

Dr. Travis is a graduate of North Carolina State’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She has owned River Road Animal Hospital since 2007. She has professional interests in dermatology and pain management/geriatric medicine and is a Certified Veterinary Medical Acupuncturist.

Her vision for RRAH has always been to be integrated into the community: a place for staff, clients and patients to share information and to provide as many options for exceptional healthcare as possible.

In her off time she loves aerial arts, gardening, spinning yarn, pottery, and keeping bees. She lives in Southport with her husband, Mike, their Great DaneVelma, Mastiff Napoleon, cats Gato and Shed Cat, parrot Kiwi, and their Blue Tongue Skink, Roy Kent.

Calley Steelman, DVM

Dr. Calley Steelman is a native of Southport and loves it so much that she returned here to practice. You may have met her as Dr. Jones, but don’t worry, she didn’t leave, she just got married! Calley did her undergraduate work in biology at Meredith College and is a graduate from North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Her veterinary interests include avian and exotic medicine, behavior, and surgery, but she still thinks that there is nothing better than a new puppy or kitten appointment. She can’t choose a favorite animal, but dogs, horses, elephants, and osprey top her list. When she’s not at the clinic, Calley can often be found reading in a hammock, surfing at the beach, or occasionally 50 miles offshore being a boat captain. She shares a house in Ocean Isle Beach with her husband Adam and their 3 dogs (Maverick the lab, Shrimp the Chihuahua, and Grits the Chihuahua mix).

Jennifer Derby, DVM

Dr. Derby is a graduate of Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. After completing her clinical year at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, she practiced in the Raleigh area for 14 years. She has worked as both a large animal veterinarian in an ambulatory practice as well as a small animal veterinarian in a practice in Sanford, NC. Dr. Derby moved to the area to be closer to family and is very excited to join the team at RRAH. She lives with her 3 dogs – Kevin, Cheddar Biscuit, and Leonardo – and her special care cat Sir Benedict Biscuit better known as Murder Cat. When she is not working Dr. Derby enjoys kayaking, horseback riding, and spending time with family. She has been a part of the RRAH Family since 2017.
